for about a year now, Zoe has made it a habit to draw or write something and then fold it up and “mail” it to me.
she will either bring it over to me in person or leave it on my nightstand.

this morning, after I dropped her off at school, I got home and glanced over to the sideboard and found this:
left especially for me.
I know these huge endearments that I now hold so dearly, will later fade into memories.
most likely, this little tradition will slowly pass on and be replaced by a private diary with lock and key, by slammed doors and a fair share of “whatever” ‘s.
I can only hope that she will remember her own wise words:
“I love u”.

I think that you could save all of those little letters and messages and put them in a book of their own. Maybe save them until your daughter has a child of her own – can you think of a nicer gift to get from your mom when you are expecting a child? It would tell her, again, how important she was to you. It will also give her a glimmer of what she has to look forward to.

You’re right about her changing her attitude when she becomes a teenager, but I promise she will still love you, even though she probably won’t say so for a few years. We never stop loving our mother, she just gets on our nerves during the teen years. Now that my Mom is gone, I regret those few years, as everyone does, I’m sure. Enjoy the little girl years while they last, they go by so quickly!
Aww! I have a valentine my son made for me when he was about 2, it nearly made me cry when he gave it to me. I still cherish it.
