island view…

ah, ha! I am one step ahead of you very smart cookies!

I’m sorry I didn’t mention in the previous post that I already have an island and I have managed to shove as much of my pantry in there that I humanly could!

I have considered putting all my baking items in the island instead and putting my pantry in the large metal shelving unit that Wende suggested. the metal shelving could go on the wall with the stove.

as for the potrack idea. I would love to put one over the island instead of over the stove but I would lose alot of my task lighting that way! the main lighting is directly over the island.

in a perfect world, I would love this little number!

ahhhhhh. to dream.
that’s about all I can do.
short of robbing a bank because did you notice the price of that thing???
$600 bones!!!

I’ll continue to explore all my restrictions options. but in the meantime, keep those ideas coming. and the more frugal, the better!

I am nothing if not cheap.
just ask my accountant.
oh wait.
I don’t have one.

  1. what about some shelves above and to the right of the wine rack? Look for architectural salvage yards in your area- I bet you can find SOMETHING there that would match the decor of the kitchen. Closed cupboards, nice pieces of molding that could be used as shelves to put nice lined baskets on (think Pottery Barn). Stuff those baskets with things you don’t use often.

Talk to contractors and builder in your area, I know here they have a place called “stardust” it is a place where you can donate your old items after you have remodeled your house (old cupboards vanities etc.). The contractors would know if there is such a place in your area and you could then browse for cheap storage options.

  2. thanks, Heather. that’s a fabulous idea! I even happen to know a couple contractors in town.
    hmmm……..

  3. Oh my gosh, how do you reach your microwave?? I just so happen to have a lot smaller kitchen than yours and my advice is easier said than done: use less stuff. I just can’t stock up on a lot of food. I go to the store often and use it often. And I only keep the cookware and utensils that I actually use regularly.
I know that somebody mentioned the Ikea catalog. Even if there isn’t one near you, it’ll give you lots of small space storage ideas to get your wheels turning. Then you can go somewhere near you(Home Depot, Walmart, Appleby’s, anyone?) and see if they have something comparable.

  4. One idea left and then I am tapped out! But then again my idea may not work for you as I am a bit taller and so this may not be quite reasonable for you. It looks like you have a lot of unused space UP! Have Jason build you a sturdy one self jobby all the way around your walls. I noticed two at least that would do the trick. You can decorate it with a few nick nacks to keep it looking nice. Hang pots, pans etc. off it. But it would creat a great place for all your cook books (I know you have way to many *wink*) and all sorts of other things you may need around but don’t need down as often. A simple step stool (Carla has to have one for regular selves in her house) should help get things up and down, but not cause to much of a hazard with the three Z’s.

P.S. Travis could probably help Jason if you want, this would be a great project for the two of them. (As long as we have the cameras ready!)

  5. I’d have to agree about the space you have up and above everything. Put some shelves up there. I like to get ours from architectural salvage yards, sand em, paint em, and either knock out the fronts and hang cute curtains or try and put glass fronts on them. I can only do the glass fronts on the cabinets that have matching dinnerware or cute stuff or otherwise all you would see is all the kids mis-matched collection of junk.
